Ms. Theresa Knight McFadden
I work in mixed media to create expressive, narrative, figures. I also make paintings, drawings and prints. The figures in my work often surprise me. They spring from my imagination and I wonder: Who are you? Yet as I think further I discover they resemble people I know or have heard of or are characters I’ve subconsciously invented to convey an idea or emotion. In any event I am using the figure, alongside allusions to art history, mythology or my own history, to explore our humanity. I use clay, wax, pigments, wood, and found objects in my sculptures, and thick oil paint, often with collage in my 2-D works. Rich and expressive materials help me communicate feelings about my subjects. The works are often colorful and exuberant, and address contemporary concerns such as personal power, sexual politics, loss and fear.
