Valerie Sunderland Watercolors
Valerie Sunderland’s enthusiasm for painting cityscapes and maritime subjects is a natural outgrowth of growing up in the row house neighborhoods of Baltimore City, working near the port of Baltimore, sailing the Chesapeake Bay and beyond and not the least, sharing her married life with a merchant seaman. While the beautiful landscape of the Eastern Shore beckons so many artists, it is the buildings, the boats, and life around the water that has captured this artist’s eye. Her travel journals are filled with rooftops from around the world, winding village streets and of course, images of colorful local boats.
Valerie’s art education has been a journey threaded together with classes and workshops with national watercolor artists and exceptional local instructors. She has won numerous awards — including, honorable mention at the prestigious juried Local Color Show (part of Plein Air Easton) for her painting of Baltimore rooftops overlooking the harbor. Valerie’s art work is exhibited in the annual Labor Day Art Show in St. Michaels, the members’ exhibit at the Art Academy in Easton, the Ocean City Art League Gallery, the A.M.Gravely Gallery in St. Michaels, the walls of the Calhoon MEBA Engingeering school in Easton, as well in exhibits sponsored by the St. Michaels Art League in venues all over Talbot County.
